ˇYoga Caliente! = Hot Yoga!
ˇYoga Caliente!, based in Burlington VT, USA., is a bilingual Yoga
program that has 30 basic Yoga postures that are held, and are
instructed in Spanish and English. While there are 30 basic postures
in ˇYoga Caliente!, it is not a stagnant practice, so the postures
and sequence may change. In all of the ˇYoga Caliente! postures
focus is developed by remaining aware of the breath. Awareness of
breath continues with meditation at the end of practice.
ˇYoga Caliente! is a beginning Yoga class that teaches Yoga basics,
and is an excellent practice to prepare students for other styles of
Yoga such as Ashtanga.
The ˇYoga Caliente! classes currently being offered focus on the
yogic rather than linguistic aspects of the class. This is to say
that the amount of Spanish being used in ˇYoga Caliente! is not that
much, similar to the amount of Sanskrit used at many other Yoga
classes. Besides the names of the poses and the names of body parts,
about ten commands and five or six adjectives and adverbs telling
how to get in the postures will also be spoken in Spanish and
English. Spanish speakers will certainly have enough information
delivered to follow the postures. Spanish spoken in class is always
translated into English. English speakers will learn a little
Spanish.
The amount of Spanish spoken during ˇYoga Caliente!, however, can be
variable, depending on the needs of the practitioners: English
speakers who want to learn Spanish, and Spanish speakers who want to
learn English. Special classes may be set up to meet student’s
specific linguistic and/or physical needs. ˇYoga Caliente! is an
excellent compliment to any sports or exercise program.
The temperature of the studio or classroom for ˇYoga Caliente! can
also vary. At Yoga Vermont, where class is currently being taught,
ˇYoga Caliente! is practiced in a hot studio, reaching about 90
degrees. (The ideal temperature for Yoga Caliente is 95 degrees), so
expect to sweat. Students need to have a Yoga mat, a beach towel to
lay over the mat, a hand towel and at least one liter of water - and
a towel to dry off. Wear light, comfortable clothing (workout top,
shorts, leotard, swimsuit).
